Steven Thornquist, MD Sworn in as 179th President of CSMS

September 27, 2017 (North Haven, CT) – At the 225th Annual Meeting of the Connecticut State Medical Society, Steven C. Thornquist, MD was sworn in as the 179th CSMS President.

In his inaugural address, Dr. Thornquist spoke of the unique role of the physician:

The practice of medicine allows us great insight into humanity.  We get to be present for incredibly intimate moments in our patients’ lives, and to influence them in powerful ways.  We see them when they are vulnerable, and help them to rise again.  What we do is far more than a job, it is a profession.

Dr. Thornquist addressed the challenges of practicing medicine in a changing environment, as well as the need to increase the diversity of the Society’s membership, and provide more opportunities for younger physicians to participate in the Society.

A board-certified ophthalmologist practicing pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at The Eye Care Group in Waterbury, Dr. Thornquist is also a Clinical Instructor at the Yale University School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science.

Dr. Thornquist earned a BS in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MD from the University of Arizona, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Pennsylvania Scheie Eye Institute, and his fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at St. Christopher’s Hospital at Temple University.

Long active in organized medicine, Dr. Thornquist has served in a number of leadership roles at the Connecticut State Medical Society, including Associate Counselor, Treasurer, and Vice President. He is a past President of the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians (CSEP) and currently serves as CSEP Legislative Co-Chair; he is also a past President of the New Haven County Medical Association.

A fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), Dr. Thornquist is also a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and of the American Medical Association.

Dr. Thornquist and his wife live in Bethany, Connecticut.
